MALAPPURAM: The Calicut University will confer honorary doctorate to Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi. A function would be held on the varsity campus in Malappuram on September 26. The varsity syndicate in its meeting held on August 19 has decided to confer honorary DLitt degrees to Sheikh Sultan along with actor Mohanlal and former sprint queen P T Usha at the same function.

Later, the university has affected changes in the function taking into account the protocol and security considerations for the visit of Sheikh Sultan. The two other awardees will be conferred the honorary degrees later.

"As per the direction from the Ministry of External Affairs and the state government we have decided to confer the honorary doctorate only to Sheikh Sultan at the function scheduled to be held on September 26.The state government has formally written to the varsity on the matter. On receiving the communication, I had met the chancellor and he has asked to suggest another date to confer the honorary doctorates to Mohanlal and P T Usha ", University Vice-Chancellor Mohammed Basheer said.

He said that the changes in the function has been conveyed to Mohanlal and Usha and they have also agreed to it. "We are planning to confer the honorary degrees to them within one month after the first function”, he added.

Sheikh Sultan, who has been the ruler of Sharjah since 1972, is a celebrated writer and historian and has authorised over 500 books covering history, culture and literature.

Sheikh Sultan is also recipient of 17 honorary degrees from universities across the world.
