THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A statue of social reformer Ayyankali was defaced by unidentified miscreants near Poonkulam in Thiruvananthapuram.

Certain portions of the statue, which had been erected at Kolliyoor around five years ago, were found damaged in the early hours of the day. The broken pieces were found abandoned nearby.

Besides, flagpoles that were erected in the area as part of the Ayyankali Jayanthi celebrations recently were also found damaged.

According to the Thiruvallam police, the incident is believed to have occurred sometime after 2 am, after a patrol team had passed by the area.

Various Dalit organisations, including the Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha (KPMS), protested against the incident and observed a hartal in the region, the police said.
