Manju who reached Kozhikode the other day to attend a private function had a special experience. There was a granny among the audience. As soon as the old woman saw Manju, she came to her, hugged her. When tears started rolling down her cheeks, Manju interrupted to ask why she was crying. “It is because of joy, daughter,” she replied.

Soon there was a wave of murmur from the audience, “who the granny could be?”. But that person had disappeared from the venue even before the function’s end .

Manju later jotted down on her Facebook page “ The other day the moment captured by a camera…when that face radiant with  love vanished from my sight, I felt like I had something to ask her and she had something to tell me. Wherever she is, let her support and prayer give me support,” she wrote.

With this, social media was abuzz with enquires about the old woman. Later it came to be known that she was not an ordinary person. She is a singer and former Akasavani artiste Rabiya Beegum.

She has been an A Grade artiste for the past 65 years. When Vaikom Muhammed Basheer’s story was made a play by K T Muhammed, Rabiya was the heroine of Ummer. Later when Ramu Karyatt and Sathyan came directly and invited her to the film field, she rejected all those offers.

If she had accepted those offers that day, she would have been a great artiste today even Manju would adore.
