NUS, NTU come out tops in Asia university ranking This is the first time NUS has attained the top position in the Times Higher Education Asia rankings since the category was introduced in 2013. NTU jumped eight spots to rank joint second with China's Peking University. SINGAPORE: The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have taken the top two spots respectively in the latest Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings published on Tuesday (Jun 21). This is the first time NUS has attained the top position in this ranking of Asian universities since the introduction of the category in 2013. The university has been ranked second in the past three years' rankings, after the University of Tokyo. NTU jumped eight spots from last year to rank joint second with China’s Peking University. The Asia University Rankings uses the same 13 indicators as the World University Rankings, which reflects a university’s strength in five areas – teaching, research, citation, industry income and international outlook. However, it places more importance on industry income and research income, and also on productivity, in terms of publications, and less emphasis on reputation elements. NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said: "We are delighted that NUS has been recognised as the top Asian university in the latest rankings by the Times Higher Education. "Together with NUS’ top placement for the past three years in the QS Asian Universities Ranking, these results affirm NUS' strong reputation as a leading global university," he added. NTU President Professor Bertil Andersson said this latest ranking shows that Singapore is now "the top city in Asia for higher education". "We hope NTU’s success will inspire all young universities in the world that a strong commitment to rapid transformation is possible and achievable as long as you work hard at it," he said. Times Higher Education World University Rankings’ editor Phil Baty said NUS has a “powerful all-round performance", but its strength in research "really stands out". "NUS stands as an example to the rest of Asia – indeed, to the rest of the world – in terms of how to attain world-class status," he said. Mr Baty described NTU as "one of the most exciting and closely watched universities in the world". "NTU has performed well across all of our 13 rigorous performance indicators, showing strength across teaching, research and international outlook, but it is perhaps worth highlighting NTU’s outstanding work with industry. NTU’s cutting-edge research continues to ensure that it attracts the leading industrial research partners," added Mr Baty. - CNA/lc
