The receptionfor the duo was to honour for their NHS funded project in India in the area of diabetic retinopathy.  Prof Sobha Sivaprasad the internationally acclaimed eye specialist of Moorfield Eye hospital, is the head of a team of specialists who are in the process of introducing affordable eye tests in India to detect early possible onset of blindness among people with diabetes. As Kerala is the diabetic capital of India, the project is being introduced in Kerala first. There Kerala government is in advance stage of public health awareness schemes. And the new project will work along the existing health schemes of Kerala and other states.

Prof Sobha Sivaprasad in her speech advised people to eat moderately and cut down body fat especially around waist. Have regular exercise or be very active. Apart from checking the weight it is also important to have regular check-ups for diabetes and blood pressure. There was also an interactive session with people at the end of the lecture on health.

Prof Gopalakrishnan of East London University, will be leading the educational aspect of the project which include research capacity building of ophthalmologists, training aspects of screening for diabetic retinopathy of nurses and multipurpose workers, and training of ASHA workers in spreading public awareness about diabetes and its complications including blindness.

As part of the multi million pound project to test the early onset of blindness among diabetic patients, £ 3000 cameras are being introduced in India replacing the present £15,000 expensive cameras. This project was launched earlier at House of Lords in London and the international advisory board chair of this is Lord Kamlesh Patel. Once it becomes successful in India, it is likely to be introduced in the NHS of UK.

The reception at Sree Narayana Guru Mission of the UK in East Ham was held as part of the monthly pooja. G Suresh Kumar welcomed everyone and Manambur Suresh introduced Dr Sobha Sivaprasad and Dr Gopalakrishnan to the packed monthly gathering audience. G Sasikumar president of SNGM thanked all for the event. The monthly gathering was sponsored by P V Vijayan.
